Common Toothbrushing Mistakes & How to brush your teeth the right way
Brushing teeth - something that all of us do on a day to day basis. A basic and simple habit that we have learned since we're little that we hardly even think twice about on a given day. But what if we tell you that you've been doing it incorrectly the whole time? Keep on reading to find out why!
Let's start with the tools
- You should use a soft-bristled brush that has the size and shape that fit your mouth and allow you to reach all areas easily.
- Replace your toothbrush regularly. Our dentists and hygienists here at Ocean Dental Care Oakville advise our patients to replace their toothbrush every three month or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't be efficient at cleaning your teeth and may leave some areas of your teeth not completely clear and fresh.
- Make sure to use Fluoride toothpaste every time you brush your teeth.
Common mistakes people make while brushing teeth
1. You brush too hard
When it comes to brushing your teeth, harder isn't better. Some people try to scrub their teeth as hard as possible as they believe that it would make the plaque and bacteria dissolve faster. But it's not entirely correct. Plaque is soft and loose, so with just regular amount of brushing, they will dissolve and come out easily. Don't risk hurting your mouth and gum next time you're trying to "scrub" your teeth!
2. You brush too fast
The appropriate duration for teeth brushing is at least 2 minutes each time. But surprisingly, some people brush their teeth and finish in less than 1 minute. If you don't take time to thoroughly brush all the areas of your mouth, you can leave room for bacteria to grow and more plaque and tartar will start to accumulate. So protect your oral health by trying to use a timer next time you brush your teeth. We'll guarantee you'll see a difference in how clean your mouth feels!
3. You don't brush all sides of the teeth
Most of us may only brush the outer (the part that people can see) and the chewing side of the teeth and forget about the tongue side (the inner side where your tongue touch your teeth). This is of course not sufficient to achieve a clean and healthy dental habits. You may not be able to see what's going on on that side of the teeth but the dentists can tell. When people go for their teeth cleaning appointment, we sometime would see a line of inflammation with built-up calculus on the tongue side as some people have neglected cleaning there. So remember, next time when you brush your teeth: brush all three surfaces thoroughly and don't leave anything off the hook!
Beside brushing, our dentists and dental hygienists at Ocean Dental Care in Oakville also recommend daily flossing and visiting our clinic for general oral examination and check-ups at least twice a year for a thorough teeth cleaning session by the professionals.
